The finish on your car affects more than how it looks. It changes how hard it is to repair, how well a repair blends in, and what that repair costs. Here’s a plain explanation of the main types.
Solid
A single flat colour with no metallic or pearl particles — think basic white, red or black. Solid colours are the easiest and cheapest to match and repair, because there’s no flake orientation to worry about. They do show swirl marks and scratches readily, particularly in darker shades.
Metallic
Fine aluminium flakes are suspended in the paint, which catch light and give the finish depth. Metallics hide minor imperfections better than solids. The catch is that repairs are harder — the flakes have to lie the same way as the surrounding panel, or the repair will look like a different colour from certain angles. This is why a good painter will blend into adjacent panels rather than stopping at a panel edge.
Pearl
Pearl finishes use ceramic crystals that refract light rather than just reflecting it, so the colour appears to shift depending on the viewing angle. They look excellent and they are the hardest to match. Pearl repairs are usually three-stage: base coat, pearl coat, then clear. Expect them to cost more.
Matte and satin
Matte finishes use a clear coat formulated to scatter light instead of reflecting it. They look striking but they demand different care — you can’t polish or buff a matte finish, because polishing makes it glossy in that spot. Damage generally means refinishing the whole panel, and they need matte-specific cleaning products.
Looking after any of them
Whatever finish you have, the fundamentals are the same. Wash off bird droppings, tree sap and bore water staining promptly, because they etch clear coat. Park in the shade where you can — UV is what eventually breaks a clear coat down, and the WA sun is unforgiving. And wash properly, because most paint damage on a well-kept car comes from bad washing technique rather than the road.
