Most of the expensive repairs that come through our workshop didn’t start out expensive. They started as a small noise, a slow leak or a warning light that got ignored for a few months. By the time the car arrives, a $200 job has turned into a $2,000 one.

The good news is that keeping a car healthy isn’t complicated. It mostly comes down to a handful of habits that take a few minutes a month.

Check your oil regularly

Engine oil does more than lubricate — it carries heat away and holds contaminants in suspension. Once it breaks down, wear accelerates quickly. Pull the dipstick once a fortnight with the engine cold and the car on level ground. If the level is low or the oil looks black and thin, book a service.

Don’t ignore new noises

A squeal when you brake, a rumble that changes with road speed, or a tick that follows engine revs are all your car telling you something specific. Noises rarely go away on their own, and they’re usually cheapest to fix when they first appear.

Keep your tyres right

Check pressures monthly when the tyres are cold, including the spare. Underinflated tyres wear out faster, use more fuel and handle poorly in the wet. While you’re down there, look for uneven wear across the tread — that usually points to an alignment or suspension issue.

Stick to the service schedule

Logbook servicing isn’t just about protecting your warranty. It’s a scheduled chance for a mechanic to spot wear before it becomes a breakdown. If you’ve lost track of when your car was last serviced, bring it in and we’ll work it out from the odometer and the condition of the fluids.

If something doesn’t feel right with your car, give us a call on (08) 9277 4550 or book online. We’d rather look at it early than replace half a driveline later.
